English Summary

Editorial

This year it will be forty years since the very first Kotkansiipi. In the editorial of this issue of Kotkansiipi, the subject is about the purposes of scout-troop magazines, especially of Kotkansiipi and of those who are most inportant persons to any magazine- namely the readers. Editor-in-chief points out that Kotkansiipi should be own magazine to all its readers from young wolf cubs to elderly scouts and all those who are not actually members of the movement but in someway are interested of us- parents, families and other supporters. So let us raise our wings and climb up the skies like the eagles.

Troopleader

The troopleader of Turun Sinikotkat Joni Holmroos writes about leadership. Scoutleader needs to have from time to time some fundamentally new challenges and to see leading as a dynamic rather than a routine process. Leadercouncil is a place for leaders to discuss, argue and invent out something new and constructive. having been troopleader for two and a half years now, mr Holmroos also expresses his gratefullness to older members and leaders in the troop for having assistance and help. Finally the very important thing not to forget is the little word "thank you" which may be the decisive factor for success while facing the next challenge by ones couting path.

Satahanka IX

Satahanka IX, the Finnish international sea-scoutjamboree in Bomarsund, Aland is coming soon in the beginning of August from the 1st to 8th. All participants should have been signed up but a lot of work is to be done during the couple of months before the camp may begin. There will be about one and a half thousand participants and among them about 30 sinikotkas.

My scouting- whose scouting?

Lauri Luoto writes about the basic principles scouting. While scouting is principally learning by doing, it is crucial to let the younger ones to do as much as they ever can. Scouting programs in any happenings shouldn't be too authoritative and it is to remember that too deep preparation by leaders is not actually what the boys need and as a matter of fact like. The boys should be left with as much challenges as leaders ever can so that growing up as a scout will be interesting and challenging during the whole career.

It still affects

A former member of TSK approached the editors with a text in which he describes his scouting path in Turun Sinikotkat in the late forties. The pictures set before us by a scout as old as our troop are as lively as they must have been in some fifty years ago.

The medals of Turun Sinikotkat

The chairman of the committee for the medals of Turun Sinikotkat, Antti Puro, describes the symbolism and use of our new medals introduced in the 60-year anniversary last year. The medals, golden, silver and bronze, have been stamped with an emblem consisting an eagle from the scarfbadge of Turun Sinikotkat, a boyscout lily and a rudder which all symbolize the different aspects of our scouting.

TSK's churchnight 25.10.1997

In the jubilee week of TSK last october was held a churchnight at the Turku Cathedral. The youngest wolf cubs swore their oath, the vice-leader Timo Toimi, dean Jukka Paarma and the president of military veterans in Turku Antti Näsi spoke. The service was moving and raised many thoughts.

A camp for THE real men

It is said that some scouting activities are too soft for the real scouting masculines.
