Editorial
While celebrating anniversary is time to think of past
and future. Our jubileumcamp in Kemiö began the very same day 90
years later the first scoutcamp in Brownsea Island began. Turun
Sinikotkat is now 60 years old. In any case we have the future in
front of us and it is something to be thought over for the future
and the future will be made by us, and by no-one else.
Troopleader
Joni Holmroos, troopleader of Turun Sinikotkat, has
headed his column "Parents, supporters and Sinikotkas".
60 years of scouting is not possible without support from all
possible sources- it is not necessarily all material.
Encouragement and good relations with all who have been with us
is obligatory. Everyone of us has a mission to do for our
scouttroop.
Together- always!
Matti "Niksu" Nikkonen, Sinikotka and our parish
youthguide tells of his first years as a member of our scouttroop
by rereading his columns in Kotkansiipi Magazines of early 80's.
He titled his first article as "Together- now!" and
the current titling seemes to be a good choice to reflect
Niksus's work for and within TSK.
What does a scoutleader learn in
army?
Lauri Luoto, one of our leaders is currently doing his
military duty in Finnish Army. He studies also educational
sciences in the University of Turku and presumably from this
point of view he compares educational systems of military and
scoutmovement finding some interesting point which could
be thought to be used in both organisations.
It started in autumn 1937
Kotkansiipi publishes two letters written by scoutleader
Reino Aalto of Siniset Partiopojat which was a national
scoutorganization in Finland for troops scouting within parishes
and YMCA:s. Mr. Aalto wishes the founder of TSK, scoutleader Unto
Mättö, welcome to Siniset Partiopojat, offers help and tells of
coming events.
Recollecting the past
A veteran Sinikotka, scoutleader Seppo "Sepa" Lahti
recollects his memories of the times he joined TSK. Sepa tells us
of best memories from his scouting career and his opinions of
current state of affairs in our scouttroop. Mainly he concerns in
calling for good old methods.
Against the wind
Scoutleader Pasi Mikkonen writes in his column of his
opinions of scouting, seascouting and what should be done for it
in the future. Mr. Mikkonen states clearly that seascouting and
scouting in general has to live the world of today. The way of
keeping young scouts interested in this hobby is to come into the
terms with their reality.
Juha Lehtonen - Troopleader of his
own will
The former troopleader of TSK, Juha Lehtonen, has been
interviewed by our current leader. Juha tells of his scouting and
civilian career and thinks aloud what he achieved while leading
TSK for a half-decade.
50th springparade and
four decades of magazines
A veteran sinikotka, scoutleader Simo "Simppa"
Laaksonen was interviewed by Kotkansiipi Magazine. Simo tells of
his scouting years and of those posts he held while active in
TSK. Simo was a secretary of troop for about ten years and till
the last year he acted as a magazine agent of TSK for nearly
forty years.
Kotkanlento
About ten years ago two young scouts were "forced"
to write a story of your previous jubileumcamp for Kotkansiipi
magazine issue 2 /1997. This issue never came out and this is the
reason why the repot is published now, ten years later. The camp
was held in Houtskär, in Turku Archipelago.
The Jubileum Camp in Kemiö
The Jubileum Camp of TSK of the year was held in
Kemiö. Writer who stayed in the camp for a few days recollects
his and campleader Joni Holmroos's memories about the camp. How
did it feel and how it sorted out finally.
Galleyslaves bitter
account
A team of five Sinikotka's rowed our rowboat Sextant to the
Jubileum Camp. Sextant is the oldest boat especially constructed
for seascouting purposes still being used in whole Finland. Next
year is the 40th anniversary of this venerable vehicle. Joni
Holmroos, Timo Toimi, Oskari Huiskala, Kai Koskinen and Harri
Jokinen rowed for 10 h 45 min till they finally reached the
campsite. The local newspaper Turun Sanomat published an article
of this journey of which the text is accompanied.
The Troop Anniversary Hike
In the beginning of June this year a hike was organised to
the Helvetinjärvi National Park, north of Tampere in Central
Finland. The participants tell in their diary notes the original
feeling of this hike which was any case very favourable if
thinking of weather.
Harhama- Scouting Competition
of the Scout District of the Proper Finland (V-SP)
A member of Winner team in the autumn V-SP tells of
the competition. He says that the tasks were sensibly measured,
for they did leave time for selfmaintenance and rest.
Escadre Sailing of
the V-SP
A sailor who took part in this very minimal escadre lively
describes his and his fellowscouts' voyage across the Archipelago
and the Sea of Åland to the Swedish Archipelago and Stockholm.
Some useful notes of B-P
Mark Bryant's book "Private Lives" reveals some
facts not widely known which Kotkansiipi now reveals. Did you
know e.g. that B-P always woke up at 5 am?
Archipelagosea
Sailing
The younger sailors of TSK sailed for about a week in the
Finnish archipelago with their skipper Olli Saarinen who almost
missed the whole voyage. The crew sailed around and made
educational excursions to interesting sites.
Wolf Cubs
Wolf Cubs have been through a lot of activity since the last
Kotkansiipi Magazine. It is good to bear in mind that too heavy
backpacks should be leaved home while parting for a camp.
Tammileiri 1998 - An
Adventure in the Gaul
The next camp of V-SP for wolf cubs takes place next june.
Cubs will be living in the Gaul for four days adventuring
possibly with some gaulish celebrities hunting for
"boars" and "fighting" romans.
From the beginning of the 40's
An Ancient article from the Kotkansiipi issue 3 / 1962 is
published here to tell us something about the beginning of the
40's in the TSK. Mr. nahkuri tells of his recallings of the
beginning of his scouting career.
What Daphne?
Scoutleader Altti Holmroos writes about the famous sailing
boat Daphne of famous novelist Göran Schildt. He tells how it
was almost to be a boat of Björn Landström. Landström is also
widely known finnish author whose best known work is the
"Sailing ship" which is one of the best accounts of the
sailing ships in the world.
Patrolgallup 1997
Kotkansiipi interviewed all the seven troops in TSK asking of
their doings, plans and future activities and of course THE
famous Final Comments which are in nearly legendary position in
these semiregularly made interviews.
Kuhankuono
Some 15 miles north of Turku lies a public hiking area, which
can easily be reached by local communal transport. This makes it
an excellent place to visit with friends, a patrol or any other
group you only like.
Höyheniä
Höyheniä (Feathers) reveals the latest news of TSK. The
ressults of various competitions, who has passed their student
examinations, who has married and written a doctoral thesis. Did
you know that in the finnish magazine "Partiojohtaja"
(Scoutleader) had in its' issue 3 / 1997 32 pages?
Coming events
TSK will be having this year an annual scouting contest, cubs
will be having their camp and so on during the last part of this
year.
Kotkansiipi-boy
Mika-Petteri "Milkkis" Kutila has been
spotted by a bypassing paparazzi. Knowing him, this photo is
actually quite well corresponding with the usual truth.
Editor is slashing his wings
Big thankyou's to all participating in making this
Kotkansiipi accompanied by some practical information how to
introduce material for this magazine.
